Deep South

Published 2000

Anna travels cross-country to Mississippi, only to encounter terrible secrets in the darkest heart of the South.

Deep South, set on the Natchez Trace Parkway in Mississippi, is the eighth in the series. It was nominated for an Anthony.

"I worked for two years on the Natchez Trace Parkway in Mississippi.  I lived about a mile and half from the Trace in Clinton, MS before moving to New Orleans. Since coming to the south I'd wanted to do a story on the Trace. The place is rife with mystery and characters.  For a long time I couldn't come up with anything. The Trace is a road for chrissake! You get on, you kill somebody, you get off.  A mystery haiku at best.  Finally I found my story in the old graveyard near my house in Rocky Springs. "
